It’s been a while!

Almost four years! And a lot has happened, for everyone. For Yonder Honey, we’ve relocated away from York to a new location and we have in the last month established two new apiaries, with, so far, a total of three new hives.
The bees are settling in well, are super active, and the pollen colours are starting to show in their comb – lots of yellows, pale green, and a burnt orange too.
No honey to sell just yet, but we are hopeful and we’ll post on our Instagram as soon as we have any available to share.
So – it’s great to be back and watch this space (and Instagram) for updates on the bees, honey and what’s next for Yonder Honey Yorkshire!

Bloom! Festival, Dean’s Park, York

We joined the Bloom! Festival in Dean’s Park in the shadow of York Minster to exhibit the Wherever The Wings Take Us documentary photography of our bees by Jim Poyner, and also to invite people to take part in making paper flowers for The Bee Spoon (pictured above). The Bee Spoon is part of a project by Dr Debbie Maxwell, University of York and highlights just how much work goes into your jar of honey.
Did you know that one worker bee will make a twelfth of a teaspoon of honey in her lifetime?
If you made a flower you got to press the button on the Bee Spoon machine, with enough flowers made it released a drop of honey to fill a specially made silver bee spoon (made to a twelfth of a teaspoon size).

Honey Bee Day (weekend) at Neal’s Yard Remedies, York

Very happy to join the NYR team in York to mark Honey Bee Day with tastings of two honeys from the same hive extracted just 5 weeks apart – one a soft set and one very runny! Also on display was Jim Poyner Photography‘s wonderful close-up image of our bees. Loved talking all things honey bee and choosing my favourite NYR Bee Lovely product – the wonderful for feet All Over Balm:

Pollination and Bees Event Day, Rural Arts, Thirsk

We joined the excellent Rural Arts team in The Courthouse in Thirsk for a day all about bees. Welcoming members of the public to taste our honey; see the From Wherever the Wings Take Us photography exhibition by Jim Poyner Photography; experience the Bee Spoon which is part of Dr Debbie Maxwell’s Telling the Bees project (University of York); make willow bees and illustrate their own pollinator magnets. The Rural Arts Cafe team also got in on the theme with yellow and black stripy cakes and were spotted wearing wings:

From Wherever the Wings Take Us – Exhibition visits City Screen York (Oct 2017), York Explore Library (Dec 2017) and York St John for the York Literature Festival 2018 (March 2018)

Jim Poyner’s documentary photography exhibition of the Yonder Honey bees has been touring York venues since October 2017. First shown at City Screen cinema in the cafe bar, the exhibition then moved to York Explore library, before moving to York St John University for the York Literature Festival to coincide with the launch of the Pollination Project Anthology (22 March 2018).

The images show Yonder Honey hives from across York and in some more unusual locations being checked, moved, and honey being extracted. Jim Poyner shadowed us through the beekeeping months (March to Sept) throughout 2017 documenting how we work with our hives – and photographing everything whilst also wearing a full bee suit, veil and gauntlet gloves!

We very much hope to keep the tour of this exhibition going, so if you would like to host it please do get in touch!
